Axie Infinity Seasonal MMR Reset Explained (Season 19, Jan 2022)

Did your MMR suddenly drop after the season reset? Don’t panic!

This guide will explain in detail how the seasonal and offseason MMR system works in Axie Infinity.

Season vs. Off-season in Axie Infinity

First, let’s discuss about the difference between a “Season” and an “Offseason.”

In Axie Infinity, an Arena Season usually runs for about one month, followed by an Offseason period for another 1 month, followed by another Arena Season, and so on.

In an Arena Season, players compete to reach the top of the leaderboards by increasing their MMRs.

In an Offseason, players do not compete for AXS rewards at the end of the period. This is also where devs usually develop new features and decide on balance updates which will then be introduced on the next season.

To give you an idea, here are the start and end dates of the last few seasons and offseasons:

  • Season 16 — March 22 to April 18, 2021
  • Offseason — April 18 to May 17, 2021
  • Season 17 — May 17 to June 13, 2021
  • Offseason — June 13 to August 9, 2021
  • Season 18 — August 9, 2021 to September 19, 2021
  • Offseason — September 19 to November 10, 2021
  • Season 19 — November 10 to January 4, 2022

At the end of a Season, the top ranking players will be rewarded with AXS tokens based on the MMR they ended up with.

For Season 19, here are the corresponding rewards per ranking.

To give all players an equal chance to climb the leaderboards, all players will start with 1200 MMR at the start of the Season.

Then, once the Season ends, the MMR of all players will be reset back to their Offseason MMR.

Now, where is where the confusion mostly lies.

How the Axie Infinity MMR System Works

Now, let’s discuss what the Axie Infinity devs announced regarding the MMR system.

Each player will have two types of MMR:

  1. Seasonal MMR
  2. Offseason MMR

What is Seasonal MMR?

The Seasonal MMR is used to rank players in the Season Leaderboards. The top ranking players will receive corresponding AXS rewards based on their rank.

Seasonal MMRs are reset to 1200 at the start of a Season. This is to give everyone an equal opportunity to compete in the tournament.

Once an Arena Season ends, your MMR will be reset to your Offseason MMR.

What is Offseason MMR?

Offseason MMR is different from your Seasonal MMR.

The Offseason MMR is your original MMR before a season started. Your MMR will be reverted back to this number once a season ends.

This type of MMR is not used to rank players in the leaderboards and there will be no AXS rewards for the top ranking players.

Seasonal vs. Offseason MMR Example

To put everything we learned so far, let’s have a look at a real-life example.

Let’s say you started playing Axie Infinity before Season 18 with an MMR of 1100.

Here’s what your Season and Offseason MMRs may look like:

(Note: MMR in bold is what’s shown in the game)

Date Seasonal MMR Offseason MMR
Before Season 18 1100 MMR
Season 18 starts 1200 MMR 1100 MMR
Season 18 ends 2000 MMR 1100 MMR
Offseason starts 1100 MMR
Offseason ends 1800 MMR
Season 19 starts 1200 MMR 1800 MMR
Season 19 ends 2100 MMR 1800 MMR
Offseason starts 1800 MMR

In this example, you started with 1100 MMR before Season 18 started.

When Season 18 started, your MMR will be set to 1200. This is now your Seasonal MMR and it will be used to rank in the leaderboards (and win AXS rewards at the end of the season).

Let’s say you climbed to 2000 MMR until the last day of Season 18.

The next day, once the offseason starts, your MMR will go back to 1100 which was the offseason MMR you had before the 1200 reset.

Now let’s say you climbed to 1800 MMR during the whole offseason. Once Season 19 starts, your MMR will be reset to 1200 again so everyone has an equal chance to compete in the leaderboards.

Once Season 19 ends and the offseason starts, your MMR will now go back to 1800 which was your last offseason MMR before Season 19 started.
